If you run a clinic, a villa, a real-estate agency or any local service, Diwali week means more people asking "is this available, and what does it cost?" on WhatsApp at the same time. The businesses that win are not the ones that send the most broadcasts. They are the ones whose templates were approved early, whose list only holds people who said yes, and who answer the 11 pm enquiry before a rival does. This guide gives you a dated plan, the costs, and two messages you can copy.
When exactly is Diwali 2026?
According to Drik Panchang, Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Amavasya (new-moon) tithi running from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November.1 Dhanteras, the day many Indians buy gold, utensils or vehicles, is Friday 6 November.2 Muhurat (auspicious time) hours differ by city, so check your own city's panchang before you promise a time to customers.
What does a sensible timeline look like?
Wati, a WhatsApp tool vendor, suggests that the buying window opens three to four weeks before Diwali and that campaigns run in phases: a teaser, an early-bird offer, a peak-rush push and a last-minute week.5 That is one vendor's view, not Meta's, but it fits how festive demand builds. Here is the same idea turned into dates for a small business:
| Dates (2026) | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Now to 25 Oct | Submit festive templates; clean your list | Templates need review time6 |
| 26 Oct to 1 Nov | Early-bird message to people who opted in | Warm contacts book first |
| 2 to 5 Nov | Peak rush: fast replies, follow up every open enquiry | Wati expects volume to spike hard5 |
| 6 Nov (Dhanteras) | Last-minute slots and closing times | Make cut-offs clear |
| 8 Nov (Diwali) | Short greeting only; staff off or on a rota | Do not overload people |
| 9 Nov onward | Thank-you and feedback; revive unanswered enquiries | Wati suggests feedback and win-back messages after the festival5 |
Who may you message at all?
WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy says you may contact people only if they gave you their number and you received permission to contact them.4 It also says you must respect every request to opt out, and it recommends separate opt-ins for different kinds of message.4 Our earlier guide on DPDP and WhatsApp consent covers the Indian law side.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Send the offer to guests, patients and buyers who agreed to hear from you | Upload an old exhibition or visitor list and broadcast to it |
| Send one relevant message per person per phase | Send the same offer four times in a week |
| Make "Reply STOP to opt out" obvious | Hide the opt-out or ignore a STOP |
| Watch blocks and reports daily in peak weeks6 | Wait until after Diwali to look at feedback |
Why it matters: the policy says significant negative feedback can lead WhatsApp to limit the amount of messages a business can send.4 Chakra HQ adds that your sending capacity depends on your messaging tier and quality rating, and that too many broadcasts can raise block and report rates.6 A sending limit in Diwali week is the worst time to find that out.
What do the messages cost?
Meta charges per message depending on the type. Its pricing page says marketing messages are always charged at the market rate, except inside a free entry point window.3 That window opens when someone messages you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad, and Meta's page says it may stay open for up to 7 days, with marketing, utility, authentication and service messages free inside it.3 Since 1 October 2026, Meta also charges for service messages (your free-form replies) beyond 1,000 free per business phone number each month, and for utility templates sent inside the 24-hour customer-service window.3
The per-message rates on this site come from Meta's rate card effective 1 July 2026. In India a marketing message costs ₹0.8631 and a utility message costs ₹0.1150.
A worked example: a Goa villa operator
Imagine a hypothetical operator with three villas and a list of 1,500 past guests who opted in to hear about offers. Over the festive run they:
| What | Count | Cost at Meta's rate |
|---|---|---|
| Early-bird offer to opted-in past guests (marketing) | 1,500 | ₹1,295 |
| Booking confirmations sent after the 24-hour window (utility) | 200 | ₹23.0000 |
| Ad enquiries answered inside the free entry window | any | Free while the window is open3 |
The broadcast is the big line. A marketing message costs about 7.5 times a utility message, so one sloppy re-send to the same 1,500 people costs as much as the whole first send. That is why sending once per phase to the right people beats blasting everyone. These figures show Meta's rates only; your provider may add its own margin.
How do you answer faster than the rush?
Wati's advice for the peak week is practical: add your team to a shared inbox so staff can divide conversations without duplicate replies, and set up an instant greeting and FAQ bot for routine questions about stock, prices and timings.5 Do both before 2 November, not during it.
What bananaleaf.ai does here
Everything below is already built in bananaleaf.ai; whether the AI parts run for your account depends on your plan.
- Broadcasts to the right people. The audience builder filters by campaign, offering, pipeline stage or recent activity, and always leaves out anyone on the Suppressed (opted-out) list.
- Drip sending. One broadcast can go out in daily batches, for example 100 a day, then 200, then 300, instead of all at once, which fits the advice to keep sends measured.
- Operating hours and an away message. Outside your hours the assistant sends your away message once per contact per day, so a midnight Dhanteras enquiry gets an answer.
- Replies grounded in your own answers. When the AI Agent is switched on, it answers from the prices, offerings and approved answer cards you have confirmed, and hands over to your team with a task when a person is needed.
- Unanswered-lead alerts. The team is pinged when a lead has waited too long, so a quiet inbox is not mistaken for no demand.
Two messages you can copy
Festive offer (marketing template, send only to people who opted in):
"Hi {{1}}, our Diwali stay offer is open until 5 November. Reply YES and we'll share dates and prices here. Reply STOP to opt out."
Away message for the festive week:
"Thanks for your message! We're closed for Diwali from 8 to 9 November. Leave your dates and the number of guests and we'll reply on 10 November. For urgent bookings, tell us and a team member will call."
Ask your template provider or lawyer to check wording before you submit, and keep the exact text of every opt-in.
What to do this week
- Write down the dates: Dhanteras on 6 November and Lakshmi Puja on 8 November.12
- Submit your festive templates now, leaving 10 to 14 days.6
- Clean the list: keep only people who gave permission, and mark everyone else out of broadcasts.4
- Check your quality rating and messaging tier with your provider.6
- Set an away message and opening hours for 8 and 9 November.
- Split work in a shared inbox, so one person owns each conversation.5
- Check your payment method on file with Meta, since Meta's page warns that service messages can stop being delivered without one.3
- Review blocks and reports every morning from 2 November.6
Questions people ask
When is Diwali in 2026?
Lakshmi Puja, the main Diwali day, falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 according to Drik Panchang, and Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November. Puja timings differ by city, so check a local panchang for the exact hour.
When should I submit my festive WhatsApp templates?
At least 10 to 14 days before you need them, according to Chakra HQ, because review queues slow down in peak weeks. For a send around Dhanteras, that means this week.
Can I send a Diwali offer to everyone in my contact list?
No. WhatsApp's policy lets you message only people who gave you their number and gave you permission to contact them. Leave out anyone who never agreed, and honour every opt-out.
Are replies to customers free during Diwali?
Not entirely. Meta's pricing page says each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, and replies beyond that are charged. Replies inside the free window after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad stay free.
What happens if customers block or report my festive broadcasts?
WhatsApp's policy says significant negative feedback can lead it to limit how many messages your business can send, which would hurt you in the busiest week.
