A busy clinic loses patients when a WhatsApp enquiry sits unanswered overnight. Meta has now built AI into WhatsApp to fix that, and the honest answer for most small clinics is: try Meta's built-in AI first, and add a separate system only when you need follow-up, a team inbox or proof of which ad brought which patient. The rest of this post explains what each option does, using only what Meta and the press have published.
What did Meta actually launch?
According to Meta's newsroom, Business AI is an AI agent inside the WhatsApp Business app for small and medium businesses in India. It answers questions about products, services, pricing, discounts and shipping, captures leads and books appointments.1 The news agency IANS reported the launch on 7 May 2026 and added that it can be trained on a business profile, product catalogue and documents.2
In July 2026, Fone Arena reported that Meta also launched Meta Business Agent: it handles chats from the first message, recommends products from the catalogue, books appointments, qualifies leads and summarises missed conversations.3 A bigger Meta Business Agent Platform is for large enterprises that connect agents to tools such as Shopify and Zendesk.3 Businesses can join a waitlist through WhatsApp to enable the agent.3

What is still missing for a clinic?
Meta's own announcement says UPI payments inside the chat are coming "soon", so they are not live yet.1 It also says nothing about a patient pipeline, reminders sent after a day of silence, or which ad a patient came from. Those gaps matter for clinics, because most patients ask, go quiet, and book only after a nudge.
Worked example: a dental clinic with 300 ad leads a month
Say a dental clinic in Pune gets 300 new enquiries a month from Click-to-WhatsApp ads. This is an illustrative example, not a real clinic. Most arrive after 8 pm, and the single receptionist answers the next morning.
Meta's pricing page says that when a patient taps a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within 24 hours, Meta says the "free entry point" window may stay open for up to 7 days (earlier coverage, including the first version of this article, said 72 hours), and while it is open Meta does not charge for marketing, utility, authentication or service messages.5 The same page says Meta Business Agent messages remain charged inside that window, so an AI built on your own number can answer those leads at no message cost, but Meta's own agent cannot.5 The cost shows up later: a reminder sent after the 24-hour window closes must be a template message.5 If the clinic sends 300 appointment reminders as utility templates outside the window, each costs ₹0.1150, so 300 cost ₹35.0000.
The bigger cost is the patient who never came back because no one followed up. That is the part a built-in answering tool does not address.
Does Business AI work with other tools on the same number?
Meta's documents describe a separate feature, coexistence, which lets a business keep using the WhatsApp Business app while a Cloud API system shares the same number.4 Messages sent from the app stay free, while messages sent through the API follow API pricing.4 Meta's coexistence page also lists features not supported on the API side, including business tools and broadcast lists.4
We did not find any Meta page that says whether Business AI keeps working once a number is connected through coexistence. Ask Meta or your provider before you connect.
| Your situation | Sensible choice |
|---|---|
| Under about 20 enquiries a day, simple FAQs | Try Business AI in the app first |
| Many ad leads, several staff, need follow-up | Add a CRM and AI agent on your WhatsApp number |
| Need to prove which ad produced a patient | A system that records the ad and reports conversions |
| Handle price quotes or treatment plans | Keep a human in the loop for anything not on file |
A 7-question test for any AI helper
Before trusting an AI with patients, send these from a spare phone. Copy and adapt them:
- "What is the fee for a root canal?" (is the answer your real price?)
- "Do you do braces for kids?" (does it say when it does not know?)
- "Can I come tomorrow at 6?" (does it check the calendar?)
- "I have severe pain right now." (does it send a human?)
- "Send me your location." (does it send the right one?)
- "STOP sending me messages." (does it honour this?)
- "Can I speak to the doctor?" (does it hand over cleanly?)
What bananaleaf.ai does here
bananaleaf.ai is an AI sales assistant and CRM that runs on your own WhatsApp number. The assistant answers from facts and answer cards you approve, and when something is not on file it sends a holding reply and raises a task for your team instead of guessing. It can book appointments against your calendar, move leads through your pipeline stages, and show you the document or fact behind each AI reply. A person replying in a chat pauses the AI for that conversation, and you can switch the AI off for a number or a whole branch. The AI agent is part of an agent plan that we set up with you.
What to do this month
- Switch on Business AI if it shows up under Tools → "Your Business AI", and tell it your fees, timings and location.
- Run the 7-question test above on a spare phone and write down what failed.
- Count your leads: how many enquiries a week, how many after hours, how many booked.
- Check for gaps: who follows up with a patient who went quiet after one day?
- Ask Meta or your provider whether Business AI keeps working if you connect the number to other software.
- Join the Meta Business Agent waitlist if you want to compare it.
- Decide in four weeks using your own numbers, not a vendor's.
What changed
23 Oct 2026: The free entry point window for Click-to-WhatsApp ads is now described on Meta's pricing page as open for up to 7 days, not 72 hours, and the page notes that Meta Business Agent messages are still charged inside it.5 Updated the sentence in the pricing section.
Questions people ask
Is Meta's Business AI free for an Indian clinic?
Meta's launch announcement does not mention any price, so we cannot say. Check the Your Business AI screen in the WhatsApp Business app for your own account.
Can Business AI book appointments?
Meta says it can capture leads and book appointments. It does not say which calendar or booking system it uses, so test a real booking before relying on it.
Can I take over a chat from the AI?
Yes. Meta says owners can take over conversations from Business AI whenever needed, change how it works or turn it off.
Do I need a separate AI agent if I already use Business AI?
Not necessarily. If your questions are simple and your volume is small, the built-in tool may be enough. Outside tools matter when you need lead tracking, a team inbox, follow-ups or ad reporting.
